I Can’t Buy American Bras

Or, Why I Have a Grudge Against Victoria’s Secret.

I may have mentioned before that I was quite underweight as a teen. The result is that for quite a while my breasts were rather small, which is uncharacteristic of women in my family. Ah, genetics. Skeletally, my ribcage is also quite small; I have a high ‘waist’ because it’s the thinnest part of my torso. So, the bras I wore were small, teen bras.

Once I climbed up near a healthy weight, those genetics persevered and suddenly it was a big problem if my bra didn’t fit right! I started to safety-pin the back of hand-me-downs, to make both the cup and band fit.

I quickly realized that American bras use a weird system for sizing; they make the band shorter but use the same cups. However, this makes the band become proportionally smaller as the ribcage shrinks or the cups grow. This is a big problem! I’m sure you’ve never seen a busty petite woman with boobs in her armpits, but I’ve sure worn bras with an underwire digging in there.

Life Hack: Washing Blood From Sheets

Most women have experienced waking up to a pool of blood in their bed. There was a period of over two years where I menstruated constantly, so I have a lot of experience removing menstrual blood. The other night I found out that it works for pools of real blood too, believe it or not 😀

Closet Update: Triumph Over Yogurt

A great feature in my apartment is all the closet space. Across from the bathroom is a walk-in closet that’s as large as that whole room plus the tub! With the help of my BF, I’ve been getting a clothes system together that’s easy for depressed yogurt like me to maintain.

June 2017 Ipsy: What’s in My Glam Bag!

I know this is really late; with how busy I’ve been, I haven’t had the chance to properly test out the products. I decided to go ahead anyway, but some of the reviews are bases on early impressions.

I’m not crazy about lip motifs, since it’s always seemed like one of those shallow marketing polys for teens, like shoe shaped everything. But coupled with the theme of speaking out, and a subtle polka dot background, I like it alright. DSCN6203

Moved + Haircut

The thing in Charlottesville is a post for another day: Cville is my hometown, and I need some time to organize my thoughts.

This period of my life has been so exhausting, I don’t really know where to start. I’ve lived on my own now for a few days, and it’s been nice to have so much control over my day and my environment. My life at home wasn’t so great, to be honest. Packing was a nightmare because my boyfriend was the only one who would help me pack, despite my family consisting of six people.

Anyway, the post about my haircut is something I’ve planned for a while. Long hair was always a beauty related thing to me; as a kid I remember wanting hair that would reach the floor. I love how long hair looks on other people, too. But I would get frustrated and jealous, since in a small town in the south, you see a lot of girls with hair that’s waist length or longer. In my mid teen I was pretty unhealthy, and my hair became really damaged, breaking off until it was almost shoulder length. I babied it for a few years, keeping as much length as possible, but the ugly ends always made me feel depressed. Since I think the 1920’s was a fascinating period, I’ve been planning for years to get a bob cut when the ’20’s come back around.

During the harder parts of the school year in January, I started washing it less and less. showering became a chore and sometimes I would go for longer than a week before taking one… So I knew I needed a change; self care needs to be as easy as possible for me, since it’s a bit of a struggle.

I do feel disappointed and less cute sometimes, like if I’m looking as some Japanese illustration like this or this, but I’m really enjoying the low maintenance of a short cut. Showering is half as long now! I can towel it dry! I never need to brush it! And with a bit of styling, I still feel cute and feminine.

I don’t feel very different, so I keep waiting for it to sink in, but I guess I just feel normal. How do you feel when you get a haircut?

The Closet Overhaul

Do you ever read those articles about minimalist living? With the pictures of closets with 8 inches of space between each item? And those photos of a renovated-loft-barn with square yards of open space showing off the hard wood floors, with a drink in a mason jar on the raw-beachwood counter? Yeah, me too. It’s amazing that technology these days can access an alternate dimension.

I’ll be moving out of my family home this fall, into a little studio apartment. I don’t own much furniture, but I had an unreasonable love for little nick-nacks as a kid so I need to downsize my possessions by about x10. I don’t want feel like I’m leaving behind too much junk for my parents to deal with. However, first comes Dealing with My Clothes.
